Rangers International FC has signed former Super Eagles striker Michael Uchebo ahead of the second stanza of the 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League NPFL, which resumes this weekend. The 34 year old forward, who earned five caps for the Super Eagles and featured in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, returns to Rangers after a stint with the club in 2008-2009.
The experienced striker’s comeback is expected to bolster Rangers' ambitions of finishing in the top three and qualifying for continental club competitions. Uchebo joins a growing list of former Super Eagles players returning to the NPFL, including Ahmed Musa Kano Pillars and Brown Ideye Enyimba International.
Rangers, currently fourth on the NPFL table with 31 points, will also debut new signings Ejike Uzoechi and Patrick Egeonu from Sporting Lagos. They are set to face Niger Tornadoes at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, on Sunday, January 26, 2025.

Editorial
Michael Uchebo’s return to Rangers International marks a significant milestone in the growing trend of experienced players returning to the NPFL. As clubs aim to elevate their competitive edge, signings like Uchebo bring a wealth of experience, leadership, and skill that can inspire younger players and improve overall team performance.
Uchebo previously played in Europe for clubs like VVV Venlo in the Netherlands, Cercle Brugge in Belgium, and Boavista in Portugal. A Rangers official revealed that Uchebo was initially set to join the team in 2017 for their CAF Champions League campaign but only now finalised his return.

For Rangers, Uchebo’s signing signals their intent to challenge for continental qualification. His past exploits in Europe and experience at the highest levels of football, including the World Cup, make him a valuable asset. The move also underscores the NPFL’s increasing appeal, not just as a developmental platform but as a viable destination for seasoned professionals.
This trend reflects positively on the league’s growth. By welcoming back Nigerian stars who have succeeded abroad, the NPFL enhances its profile and strengthens its squads, creating a more competitive and exciting league for fans.
